Spark3DPrinting

UI/UX, Graphic Design, Web Development

Spark3DPrinting is a Toronto-based small-business ecommerce shop that specializes in designing and creating 3D prints. The business primarily uses Etsy as their ecommerce platform and was looking to expand their shop to other platforms including hosting an ecommerce shop on their website. The client also wanted to revamp their branding with a new logo and wanted a website that not only hosts their new ecommerce shop, but also provide up-to-date order tracking services to their customers. During the 2 month timeframe, we consulted with the client on their needs and requirements, designed a logo that best suited their brand identity and created a WordPress WooCommerce site to support their business goals.

The client has given permission to post the completed work and some of the processes and designs involved in the project.

Part 1: Logo

As part of their platform overhaul, Spark3DPrinting wanted a new logo to go with their shop revamp.

From the initial analysis of the business’s previous logos, there were 3 elements that we wanted to bring out in the new logo design: the lightbulb (which signified an idea), the line style typography (that resembles the filament/material used for 3D printing) and the spark which is shown around or inside the lightbulb (which signifies a spark in an idea and the name of the business). The client wanted a logo that was clean, simple, modern and something “spark related” such as a lightbulb or a lightning bolt while also incorporating a graphic that signifies “3D printing an idea”.

We decided to incorporate all the core elements from the previous designs into a new modernized logo. For the font-face, we went with a rectangular typeface design that resembles similar to a digital font. For the logo mark, we kept the lightbulb that is consistent with the previous designs and created a prismatic design to match the modernized revamp of the new logo. We added the lightning graphic inside the lightbulb to signify the “spark” of the name and the business. Additionally, the fill of the lightning bolt is done as a line design to resemble the filament used for 3D printing and we include a filament extruder above to signify we’re “printing an idea”.

Below are the final completed designs of the new Spark3DPrinting logo.

Part 2: Website

For their website, we decided to create a WordPress website which utilizes the ecommerce plugin WooCommerce, which is designed to host an online store, process payments and manage orders and inventory. Although there are many alternatives available to host an ecommerce site such as Shopify, the client wanted a website with a lower operating budget due to the high operational costs on various other ecommerce platforms that Spark3DPrinting is also hosted on.

We started off designing wireframes of various pages to get an idea of what’s possible from the development side while ensuring the client’s goals are met with the new website.

After the client approves the wireframes and designs, we went ahead with creating the WordPress hosted website with the requested pages including the shop using WooCommerce, order status page, and some way to connect the website with the business’s existing ecommerce shops such as Etsy.
